Jamal Lyon a character of the Fox drama series Empire, is one who was deeply loved by the fans of the series largely because of his humanness and calmness as opposed to his siblings who had either anger issues or questionable lifestyle. With a distinct voice Jamal was widely applauded, earning for himself a high positive reception.
A brief look into who lies behind Jamal brings to us his person: Justin ‘Jussie’ Smollett, a black American actor and singer. Smollett told his parents he was gay at the age nineteen and came out openly during a live TV session with Ellen DeGeneres. It would be recalled with his role in Empire, that he retained his sexuality, becoming a voice to the gay community across the world. With the recent story lingering around him, one is forced to question if the bold statement he posed on the show was just a script and not an intrinsic thing as expected of an open gay man who has been vocal about his sexuality throughout his career.
He was a while ago arrested and charged with filing a fake police report indicating an assault on him while also referencing President Donald Trump’s slogan “Make America Great Again” MAGA (benevolents) as the perpetrators of the attack. MAGA was probably indicted by the star because of having sour records for which the Voice of America states, “MAGA doesn’t just appeal to people who hear it as racist coded language, but also those who have felt a loss of status as other groups have become more empowered.”
Suggesting the very things which might have propelled Smollett to embark on such crime, one is quick to think of his sexuality as an enabling factor, was it the societal degradation of homosexuals? Or think of his career as a factor, Empire is known all over the world and have garnered a cult-like following across the world, going on to bequeath on Smollett a worldwide fame. His sexuality is however far from the question as Smollett was before the incident widely loved with a massive followership. So what went wrong? Mental unstability? A call for attention? All these can be strongly denied as with various reports surrounding the crime, all questions have been rebuked.
Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie T. Johnson in a press conference over the incident, gave details of the investigation, and explaining how with various investigations which the department had come with the fact that the alleged assault was staged. He adds that the actor did it because he (Smollett) was “dissatisfied with his salary.”
The Chicago PD also alleged that Smollett “took advantage of the pain and anger of racism to promote his career.’’
The brothers Obabinjo (Ola) and Abimbola (Abel) Osundairo, originally from Nigeria, who say they helped stage the attack also alleged that Smollett had the idea to fake the crime after the threatening letter he received did not receive as much attention as he wanted it to.
This forces us in retracing our questions as none, with various evidences has been able to prove the motive behind Smollett’s action. Was he looking for sympathy and if so in what way, is the gay community in America is widely and strongly acknowledged with hints of little or no subjugation; or was he simply questioning his fame. These questions remains unanswered.
After an emergency court appearance on March 27, 2019, all charges against Jussie Smollett were dropped. In a statement, his lawyer says: “He was a victim who was vilified and made to appear as a perpetrator.” It was added in the reports, that his record “has been wiped clean.”
Maybe the answer isn’t meant to be answered now but we are now of certain that it will possibly take a while before someone resorts to projecting their insecurity to the world in such deceitful manner.
