WhatsApp Tackles Fake News, Introduces Restrictions to Message Forwarding

Instant messaging giants, Whatsapp has reduced the number of messages users can forward on it’s platform.

This move aimed at preventing the spread of fake news using the platform limits message forwarding to 20 people.

Previously, WhatsApp had indicated in chats that a message was forwarded to a user.

In July, five people were lynched in India following rumors of child trafficking. The rumours spread like wildfire enabled by the message forwarding feature on WhatsApp.

India is the country with the highest number of forwarded WhatsApp messages. This has necessitated the instant messaging giants to restrict WhatsApp users in India from forwarding messages to five users and groups.
