On Monday, Olisa Metuh, former National Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), collapsed at the Federal High Court, Abuja upon resumption of his trial.
The presiding judge, Justice Okon Abang, stood down the matter to enable Metuh receive medical attention.
As the judge sought to continue the trial, Metuh’s counsel, Emeka Etiaba, requested to withdraw from proceedings, citing the health concerns of his client.
As council to the EFCC also sought an adjonement sighting obvious health condition, the judge threatened to acquit the defendant.
“The Federal High Court has nothing against the 1st defendant. It is the duty of the prosecution to prosecute its case.
“If the prosecution does not want to proceed with the trial, the court will strike out the case” Justice Abang fumed.
He was furious over the prosecution’s refusal to oppose the adjournment as request Metuh’s counciel. Since the Medical Doctor who was not present in court when Metuh fell down was suggesing that the matter be suspended for the defendant to be taken to the hospital, the defence council ought to oppose vehemently.
After consideration, Justice Abang reluctantly adjourned the case till Tuesday, May 22.
“In view of the application of the Medical Doctor in the employment of Federal High Court, that was not in court at the commencement of proceeding, and there being no objection, and since it is a medical opinion, this matter is adjourned to May 22 ” Justice Abang said.
Metuh’s Health Travails
On February 5 , Olisa Metuh was brought to court in an ambulance. He was stretchered into the court room after the Judge threatened to order his arrest and remand in prison custody if he failed to appear in court for continuation of his trial.
The embattled former National Publicity Seretary of the PDP, Olisa Metuh approached the Court of Appeal in Abuja to challenge the refusal of the trial Judge to allow him to travel abroad for medical treatment. He is said to be suffering from a spinal cord related ailment that has made him numb from below his waist.
Olisa Metuh is being prosecuted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commision (EFCC) for receiving the sum of N400 million through his company, Destra Investment Limited from the National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki in 2014.
