The Nigerian army has confirmed that it’s personal took part in the burning of houses in Naka, Gwer West, Benue State that resulted in the death of an elderly citizen.
While confirming the incident, the Army Spokesman, Nigerian Army 707 Special Forces Brigade in Makurdi, Benue State, Olabisi Ayeni, said that the attack which resulted in the burning of over 20 houses on Thursday was because members of the community had murdered a solder on Wednesday.
The slain soldier was said to have been mistaken for a Fulani herdsmen in military uniform when he could not sufficiently explain his status to the residents of the community. He was the lynched and buried in a shallow grave, according to military sources.
Also confirming the sad incident, the Chairman of Gwer West Local Government, Francis Ayagah collaborated the account of the Nigerian army. He he said that five suspects have already been arrested in connection with the killing of the soldier and expressed his dismay over the reprisal attack launched by the army despite the corporation of the community in identifying the perpetrators of the crime.
