China’s Weibo Backpedals Over  Outrage on Gay Content Clamp Down

China’s equivalent of Twitter, Weibo has resigned on its new policy to delete all gay content on its website. The website had announced on Friday that it would remove all homosexual and violence related content on it website in consonance with President Xi’s policy of cleaning up China’s social sphere.

This new policy sparked outrage and the ‘I Am Gay’ hashtag that received over 300 million views. Although the hashtag was deleted on Saturday,  the outrage forced the website to recind on its decision.

The social network Weibo has over 340 million active users making it bigger than twitter.
