Unveiling the True Identity of Mama Boko Haram

Many people will be wondering about the identity of the woman referred to as Mama Boko Haram.

The masked woman showing up as the face of terrorist group Boko Haram was the person calming frayed nerves over the abduction of 110 Dapchi School girls on February 19, 2018.  Mama Boko Haram confirmed that the Abu Musab al-Barnawi sect of Boko Haram kidnapped the girls. She assured that this sect wasn’t as violent as the Abubakar Shekau Boko Haram while referring to Abu Musab al-Barnawi as “her son.”

Aisha Wakil is the real name of the woman famously known as Mama Boko Haram.

She served as a member of the Dialogue and Peaceful Resolution of Security Challenges Committee set up by President Goodluck Jonathan to resolve the security challenges in the North East.

She is a lawyer and Human Rights Activist from Enugu State who converted to Islam while studying Law at the University of Maiduguri. Aisha also works for the National Human Rights Commission.

Before her marriage and subsequent convention to Islam, she was known as Ogechi.

Ogechi got married to her lecturer, Hon. Justice Alkali Gana Wakil  at the Bornu State High Court. She was in her 3rd year at the University.

After her marriage, her husband, being an Igbo Muslim convert prevailed upon Ogechi to covert to Islam. She succumbed and changed her name to Aisha Wakil after her mariage to Wakil.

Aisha, 43,  is not the only wife of Justice Wakil who is low a judge in the Bornu State Judiciary as Islamic law allows her husband to marry up to four wives. Their marriage is blessed with three children.
