#BBNaija: An Overrated Reality TV Show Corrupting,  Confusing And Distracting Nigerian Youths

On 28th January 2018. the Big Brother Nigeria TV reality show dubbed “Double Wahalla” started airing in Nigeria amidst hype and funfare.

The show promised to be an entertainment extravaganza featuring 20 house mates confined in an apartment somewhere in South Africa jostling to win a prize of 45 million naira.

The Big Brother reality TV show first aired In Europe as inspirated by George Orwell’s novel ‘1984.’ The novel became popular for the catch phrase ‘Big Brother is Watching.’

After the success of the Big Brother show the franchise then spread to UK,  Germany, United States of America, Brazil and finally to Nigeria in 2006.

The winner took home a whooping $100,000. In 2017, 11 years after,  the second edition renamed Big Brother Naija, aired with controversy surrounding the choice of South Africa as the venue for shooting the show. The winner, Efe took home N25 million amidst outbursts from Nigerians about the immoral nature of the show.

In 2018, Big Brother Naija double wahalla edition returned with an increase in the number of housemates. The number increased from 14 the previous year to 20 housemates. Male and female housemates were paired and made to face a collective destiny. This means that viewers will be voting for the respective pairs instead of individuals. So far about three pairs have had sex in The Big Brother house while some others made out on live TV.  Tobi and Cee-C were caught kissing and making out while Miracle and Mina had sex at least twice on the show. Surprisingly also,  church girl Bam Bam has also had sex with her partner Teddy A.

While many Nigerians are glued to their TV sets to catch a glimpse of the show, some others are outraged about the immorality the show promotes.

She also said that parents should prevent their underage children from watching Big Brother Naija.

She said:

“Stop asking me to fix Big Brother Naija. I Don’t have such powers. Big Brother is an adult programme. If your children are watching it, it’s your fault, not mine. Grow up & protect your children. It’s not also compulsory to watch. Use your remote control and change the channeI.”

Also in a reaction, Reno Omokri, the former aide to President Goodluck Jonathan oreacted to the sex episodes in the Big Brother Naija 2018  referred to the Big Brother Naija housemates as ‘animals’ for having sex in n the public.

He tweeted:

When I was a child, only animals had intercourse in the open for all to see. Now I am an adult, Nigerians call people who publicly have intercourse in a toilet, stars! If they are stars, it must be very dark over Nigeria! We have a culture. Not everything from the West is good!

The show is in its fifth week and six housemates have already been sent out of the house leaving 14 remaining housemates gunning for the 45 million naira price.
